So I tried an MRE (Meal Ready-to-Eat) the other day. They're pretty decent, but overall pretty random in what's exactly in the bag. Basically I had pork ribs, some bread, cole-slaw and some cookies. It also came with cheese spread and some kool-aid powder. Like I said...pretty decent as far as meals go. I'm pretty sure I won't have to eat those at all while in Iraq, and from what I hear the Galley is the best food you'll find compared to many places within the military.
I've been in New Jersey for a week now, and pretty much havn't been doing anything but basic classes. I've learned Rules of Engagement and Laws of War, and various other things we are not allowed to do in the military. All things the Army learns for their world we have to learn as well these next couple of weeks. Tomorrow I get to be flipped in a humvee; which I hear is pretty exciting...if not completely uncomfortable.
Thursday night The Dark Knight came out in theatres and in IMAX, and I'm pretty devestated that I won't get to see it for a good 7 weeks. (looking forward to September 5th!!!) Beforehand I couldn't wait to hear anything and everything involving the movie, but now that it has been released I've avoided as much as I can to keep myself being "spoiler free." I've already come to grips with me probably not being able to catch it in IMAX, but I'm dead set on at least seeing it on the big screen before I go to Iraq. Until then I really don't want to hear a word. I don't care how many people are more excited about this movie than me, nor do I care about any bandwagons that may be involved with this movie because of Heath and his tragic passing.
This is my world, and I am going to see this movie.
OK, so now that I'm done sounding like a prick. Things here should be picking up pretty soon, but for now I've had a good amount of down time. I bought a soccer ball today at the base store, but when I brought it back it turns out we're not allowed to play any organized sports. Apparently it has something to do with us not injuring each other while we're in training, but I'm not going to let that stop me from bringing the ball out and goofing off at the soccer fields right down the street.
Oh, by the way, apparently my nickname here has become "Mary Poppins." For no reason whatsoever besides the fact that someone couldn't pronounce my last name (which is what we go by in the military if you didn't know) so they just shortened it to Mary, and so the story goes. Now I have no problem with nicknames, but this one is just pure laziness in my honest opinion.
Though, I suppose I could always use the compelling argument of:
They're just jealous.
